Review of For Love of the Game (1999) by Kyle T — 09 Apr 2011
What is it with Kevin Costner and baseball films?
In this one, which is arguably his weakest, he plays an aging, down on his luck Detroit Tigers pitcher.
The Tigers are out of the playoffs, and Costner's character had never pitched a no-hitter.
Lo and behold, Costner is pitching a perfect game. In the dugout, and sometimes on the mound, Costner flashes back to recent times in his life.
How much you like this movie comes down to if you're a baseball fan or a non-baseball fan. If you're a baseball fan, this is a heart-pounding, thrilling, emotional movie. If you're not one, well, it's an average, predictable sports movie.
