Review of For a Few Dollars More (1965) by Jason R — 19 Feb 2011
Probably my least favorite of the trilogy, but that's like saying its the least favorite of your children. The truth is, the entire trilogy as a whole is great, and Clint Eastwood's character/performance is iconic in the genre. Lee Van Cleef also shows up and delivers an amazing performance brandishing his own style of gun slinging in stark contrast to "Manco's".
This movie did have a few points that bugged me...there were several scenes of action backed up by the single tang of a mouth harp that came off as more slap stick comedy than serious western. There were also a few slap stick performances to go with it (the old man who hates the railroad being the most obvious of them). Neither fit very well.
I also found this to be the least intimidating, and worst written "villain" of the series. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but when you judge "El Indio" against "Angel Eyes" and "Ramon Rojo" it just doesn't stand up. The crazy part of that is, the its the same actor who played Ramon Rojo, leading me to believe it was probably more the writing than the actor. Still not a bad movie by any stretch.
