Review of Following (1999) by Mihael W — 09 Feb 2010
Alan Sepinwall described his dislike for True Blood by saying that Sooki is too stupid to breathe. Well, Following carries the same problem, and is dragged down by it. Everything that happens is predicated on suspending disbelief on someone whose actions are rarely internally consistent, and which are never externally sensible, but yeah you also have to buy into the idea that other characters could and woud predict someone to be such a monumental moron.
The plot's needs dictate in toto this character's actions. It fails. The film is otherwise slick, visually interesting, creating a compelling grimy low-rent London world. I wish a different movie, with a different lead character, had taken place there.
