Review of Following (1999) by Ted W — 23 Jan 2017
After making his first tiny featurette, Doodlebug, Christopher Nolan returned with Following, his first feature length movie. It's a step up in terms of storyline, but not so much in terms of production values or picture quality.
Costing next to nothing, the projectr has a film-noir aesthetic, and a gritty, seedy atmosphere. But the narrative is disorganised, the acting unimpressive and the conclusion clichéd. With that said, it's still a pretty entertaining movie, delving into our deep-seated interest in the lives of strangers, and how people we know nothing about can be so fascinating to us.
It in no way stacks up to Nolan's more recent work, but in terms of doing the best with what you have, it's a pretty damn good effort.
