Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Scott S — 26 Aug 2016
While the movie dragged at the beginning and was a little overlong in other spots, the musical "interludes" made for high-brow/low-brow comedy on the order of a Mel Brooks' film.
Meryl Streep really made you believe that Ms. Jenkins really thought she had singing talent, while Hugh Grant was equally good as the smarmy hanger-on who had really found his meal ticket with this woman who was long on cash and short on just about everything else. But the performance by Simon Helberg as McMoon was the best, in my opinion. Playing a struggling pianist suddenly making quite a decent wage ($150/week in 1944), one could sense the conflict between finally making money and having to deal with such "talent". His boyish demeanor and puppy-dog enthusiasm throughout was infectious, even though it was apparent that the character himself as well as the actor was in on the joke.
All in all, I'd recommend this movie to friends, though you may need to power through the first 15 minutes or so until things get moving.
