Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Jack N — 13 Aug 2016
FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS-2016(PG-13)-Aug. 13.
By:Clem The Movie Guy.
Based on a true story, Florence Foster Jenkins is the story of one woman's dream of becoming a great opera singer despite her stunning lack of any talent. The movie is set in New York in the early 1940's. Heiress & socialite Madam Florence (Meryl Streep) is determined to achieve her goal of performing at Carnegie Hall. Assisting Florence to realize her impossible dream is her loving & supportive husband, St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant,) an English aristocrat who had a mediocre career as an actor. As Florence performs her way to her ultimate goal, Bayfield is busy hand--picking the audiences & only showing her the positive reviews. Also complicit is The Big Bang Theory's Simon Helberg as Cosme McMoon, an aspiring young pianist who fears potential humiliation from performing with Florence. All in all, Florence Foster Jenkins is a moving & inspiration story that encourages the viewer to follow their dreams. I did wish that director Stephen Frears & screenwriter Nicholas Martin had focused more deeply on some of the other facets of the characters & less on the fluff but I still enjoyed the film. The performances from Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant & Simon Helberg were very well done & I wouldn't be surprised to see Meryl back at the awards with this film. SEE THIS FILM.
