Review of Flirting with Disaster (1996) by Cj N — 03 Jan 2009
Not good, not bad...just there really. It had a bit of humor, but (as odd as it is to say) I think maybe it could have been better as a Woody Allen movie... There was a lot of quirky black comedy air too it and the main character it follows is self-centered yet self-depriciating, somewhat non-commital and yet suddenly determined to see something thru, slow to action/decision but finds himself in situations where he's suddenly driven to be impetuous, tempted by another woman and has the unconsimated affair, etc... I was reminded of 3 Woody Allen movies while watching it, and it could have been such a boon to him/his career really.
But all in all, I really wanted to like this movie more than I did... It was pretty decently cast (some picks were spot on perfect) and somewhat adequately enough written--though it lacks smooth timing--had a few twists and some humor...but somehow it didn't quite come together into a total package for me. I think it could have benefitted from Woody's touch most notably in tightening of the script and definitely fleshing out some more character development. This movie had a lot of potential and I guess if you judged it solely against 80s and 90s comedies it'd fare a little better, but it left a lot to be desired IMO...
