Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Marta S — 10 Feb 2008
Hou Hsiao-Hsien has created another beautiful and poetic film with anchoring in real life. Instead of outright stealing from Lamorisse's original, Hou instead creates a loving Homage to the wonderment of childhood and the ability of imagination to transcend the stresses of life.
This film requires a certain amount of patience, but the reward is magnificent. Would be a great double bill with Caché (also starring Binoche) if only to help restore faith in humanity. Nothing against Caché (or Michael Haneke) but it's quite amazing how two films of a similar style could have such differing messages.
