Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Dennis C — 27 Sep 2008
If you're looking for a movie that embraces you into the story without much effort and without any fancy visual/sound effect, Hou Hsiao-hsien's movies are always the best. Each of our stories can be a great story.
And this movie reflects our real life stories in such a subtle way. The whole movie is filled with quiet hints and nuances that reward the patient viewer with an emotionally rich conclusion. That red balloon is a floating notion about loneliness, urban beauty, and life complexity.
Hou Hsiao-hsien has done some similar movies made in Taiwan. This is not his best but still an affectionate because that humanistic touch only a handful of contemporary cinema artists have to offer.
