Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Mattias E — 17 May 2009
Much like director Hou's Ozu-infatuated Cafe Lumiere from 2003, Le Voyage du Ballon Rouge builds on emotion rather than drama, allowing a slice of Parisian life unfold itself at an extremely comfortable pace, a modus operandi largely dependent on the audience's patience, but in this case definitely rewarding.
Lee Pin Bing's images are more gorgeous than ever, with a hint of sepia in the outdoor scenes, and the interiors, shot in very crammed spaces, quietly reminiscent of the cinematographer's previous work on Wong Kar Wai's In The Mood For Love.
