Review of Fletch (1985) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011
The best thing in this movie is the main character himself. Chevy Chase makes an excellent role as a wisecracking news reporter, who's most of the time so over the top sly that it's hilarious. I was palming my face through the whole movie, but in a good way.
Sure, about half of the jokes are ridiculously stupid and we're expected to buy a lot, but with this film we can do that. The plot is complex enough to keep us guessing at least a little bit and it moves around so much that we're always seeing something new.
Some might say that the plot lacks consistency and focus, but I kind of liked it. I was reminded of certain Monty Python sketches in which when one joke gets too old, they throw in another one and just roll with it.
Not that this movie was anywhere near as good as Monty Python, but it had certain same elements, which made it enjoyable. So yeah, this was stupid, but I enjoyed myself. And that's all that matters, really.
