Review of Flashdance (1983) by Steve G — 13 Jul 2008
Movies about dancing: Bad.
Movies about the 80s: Good.
...confliction ensues.
Great soundtrack. Made over-sized sweaters on women a fashion staple forever (for which I am in eternal debt). There WAS certainly a youthful spirit. Created a sense of desperation in dream-chasers lookin to hit the big time which was effectively palpable. "You give up your dreams, you die.".
That said, cheese & hokeyness were through the roof. She was quite a pain & a bit of a skank. And what's worse, an angry one. Hard to sympathize with that. Her boyfriend should've followed up with the suggestion that she could use a kick in the ass.
Really though, it's just a gigantic music video with some story sequences in between... except it probably would've been better without the story parts.
