Review of Flashdance (1983) by Mack E — 03 Feb 2008
Certain films work because of their visceral punch, not because of any identifiable connection to what constitutes "good filmmaking." Flashdance spat on any concept of traditional storytelling, and essentially created the current music video sui generis.
Adrian Lyne takes a whole bunch of risks by dispensing with most of the story and focusing on the dance, but it works because he trains your eye on Jennifer Beals. Talk all you want about the current crop of roller-coaster cinema, but this will always win out.
How often do you get to see a roller coaster based around Jennifer Beals' hotness?
