Review of Flash Point (2007) by Stephen S — 13 Sep 2007
Better film that SPL, script-wise. Much more evolved and polished fight sequences too. (not that they weren't polished in SPL, but here they just seem tighter here) Like SPL, the fights are sparse and spread out but burn so brightly and brutally when they happen, it's easy to forgive the slow parts, and the shorter running time than SPL helps things drag less.
Donnie Yen's "realism" approach to fight choreography emphasizes really hard 'n dirty fighting rather than ornate and complex sparring. Your mileage may vary, depending on whether you like MMA/UFC-style fights, by personally I find it refreshing. I can go to Tony Jaa for the aerobatics, Jet Li and Jackie for the "classic" fight choreography, so it's nice to see Donnie differentiating himself with the grappeling, throws, "wrestling" moves and downright HARD hits. (watch the trailer) People who actually practice martial arts will appreciate Donnie's innovation.
