Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Dan B — 13 Jul 2008
It feels like only Herzog could create such an absurd and seemingly impossible narrative and then coolly document it with the eye of an anthropologist. The photography is stunning, Kinski superb and the story remarkably simple.
But from that story you can (if you choose) draw out themes of art, music, religion, superstition, colonialism and much more I'm sure. At two and half hours, this is not a short film, but it never really lags.
An incredible achievement.
