Review of First Snow (2006) by Paik Jin T — 13 Jan 2008
First Snow starts winningly and has a strong passage in its latter half in which Jimmy Starks (Guy Pearce) attempts to ammend his previous wrongs. Unfortunately, its middle section lags and is utterly redundant as Starks descends into paranoia.
Pearce is good as per usual, but his work isn't up to snuff with previous turns in L.A. Confidential, Memento, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Proposition. His long hair is also highly distracting as he's supposed to be playing a salesman.
Perhaps the movie's stongest suit was killer character actor J.K. Simmons as a roadside fortune teller - strange but effective casting to be sure. The real disappointment comes in the fact that this was written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and directed by the former.
These guys had a hand in writing the excellent Children of Men and the eagerly-anticipated (by me at least) Iron Man. Qualitatively, First Snow isn't in the same stratosphere as CoM. Here's hoping Iron Man will be an improvement for this promising writing duo.
