Review of First Snow (2006) by Graham H — 23 Jul 2008
Guy Pearce, Piper Perabo, and Bill Fitchner all exhibit exceptional performances in this film. It's sad that Pearce hasn't really got that defining role; he's still kind of stuck in film purgatory.
Perabo steals all of her scenes; just beautiful. Fitchner is hilarious and charming here; you almost think he's ad-libbing most of the time. They all literally shine, putting a lot of heart and soul into their roles.
I can't say the same for J.K. Simmons, but I'll let it slide because dry comedy's more his thing. With that being said, the story, direction, and visuals are all terrible. They just screamed 'wannabe indie noir flick' and could not be taken seriously.
I was intrigued by this hidden gem, or so I thought, due to the fact that is written by writing duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby, who are responsible for writing for two EXCELLENT screenplays: Children of Men and Iron Man.
Hmm youd think that talent would translate. It did not. See it if you like any of three stars I mentioned before, and if not, keep away.
