Review of First Man (2018) by Nathaniel G — 15 Oct 2018
Before I watched First Man, I was expecting a drama about space travel and the technical struggles they encountered along the way. However, what I was surprised to find was a movie more about personal tragedy and grief; and how Armstrong used space travel to cope with, or even escape from, these emotions. This emotional side was told very well with the help of Clair Foy and the musical score.
While the movie was not directly about space flight, the flight scenes are beautifully done. One thing with movies about earlier space exploration is it always seems too clean; everything has a protocol and everyone knows the answer. This movie shows the grittiness and uncertainty of space flight. The modules creak, the lighting is dim, and the protocols don't always work. As a long-time space nerd, it was oddly refreshing to see that side of the story.
Overall, a beautiful film. Highly recommend.
