Review of First Man (2018) by Nate Z — 13 Oct 2018
First Man in my opinion is one of the worst and most annoying movies I've seen in a real long time. Went to see it in Imax which was a Huge Mistake. I was thinking, wow, Imax, movie about moon landing, space, jets, etc.
Well this movie is the MOST anti-Imax movie and the reason why I say that is the "weird" use of the camera. Practically 95% of the movie is shot using extreme close ups. When one of the characters speaks, the camera is right up to their face.
There's so much movement in the camera and the camera being close up it gave me a Headache. People who easily get motion sickness don't see it. The movie centers on Neil Armstrong and in my opinion doesn't really put him in a favorable light.
Ryan Gosling plays Armstrong, but he hardly speaks throughout the movie. The plot of the movie is saying that Neil Armstrong was a very quiet and boring man. His wife is screaming at him to tell his kids he may not make it back.
The only good parts is the closeup that the astronauts feel when they are in the capsule or testing the X15, but why take the same closeup effect in normal conversations. Strangest camera work I've ever scene and don't like it.
It really did give me a headache after leaving the theater. I give it a 20% at best.
