Review of Filth (2013) by Myles J — 08 Oct 2013
Based on the novel of the same name, this looks at the alternate side to the culturally significant Scotland. I personally have not read the novel before watching this so I am entering this completely blind.
To sum it up concisely, you are sitting in a cinema and it feels like the ultimate blend of hardcore cocaine, ecstasy, whiskey, corruption, pornography, graphic sex and a mad soundtrack to match. The film focus on a unit in Scotland's police force which is why you certainly down put the above film description and the theme together.
But it is really entertaining from start to end! This is a gripping, gritty and at some points a deeply dark film and it certainly is not for the faint-hearted! The cast is superb with massive credits going to the worldclass James McAvoy who was an inspired and world class choice for the title role.
After watching the film I cannot see anyone else playing the role as well as he did. This has proven that he is an acting with so many talents and he tackles this role which is multi-layered extremely well.
Furthermore, praise must go to the supporting cast especially Eddie Marsden, Jamie Bell and Jim Broadbent. All work there role well in a film which is unanimously dominated by the lead. I always feel that if you remember other parts of the film without the lead and they are memorable and enjoyable then the supporting cast are doing a superb job.
The script is penned really well and blends traditional Scottish culture well with a 'subtle' blend of black humour. This is well worth a watch but be prepared for shocks and host of surprises to boot! I will admit I came out and was like "what the hell just happened" I will certainly watch it again! Welcome to the alternate side of Scotland!
