Review of Filth (2013) by Aaron O — 07 Jan 2015
Filth is an uneasy, clumsy mix of heavy drama and over the top comedy, and although the comedic elements are effective at times, the dramatic elements are pretty terrible. Not only is it incredibly trite, it's all impossible to take seriously because of the films comedy elements.
Their is no subtlety to be found either; the film just beats you over the head with the reason that Bruce is so unpleasant, and maybe it might of been forgiveable if the reason was at least interesting, but the reason is something that's been done dozens of times before.
Their is one thing in Filth that saves it from being a truly terrible film, and that's James McAvoy, he shows incredible range here and he rides through the films tonal jolts with ease when the even the film itself is falling over itself.
