Review of Filth (2013) by Joy E — 17 Jan 2016
Truly revelling in its depravity, Filth is a movie that more than lives up to its name. It is highly enjoyable, mainly for McAvoy's committed performance as a man who grandiose ego, perpetual manipulation and self-destructive behaviour have reduced him to living in a world of fantasy where he can hide away from the ugly reality that he is a terrible cop, as well as a terrible human being.
McAvoy is deft a handling both the twisted insanity and moments of genuine emotion and heartfelt honest his character requires, leaving it up to us to judge his sincerity. The movie has very few dry patches, and breezes past so fast that you'll never be bored by it.
Many will consider it tasteless and thoroughly unpleasant, and they would certainly have a point. And while it may not be as memorable as something like Trainspotting, which had a similar setting and tone, it's still a lot of fun, and has enough energy and standout scenes to merit repeated viewing.
