Review of Fight Club (1999) by Alejandro R — 04 Jan 2015
"You met me a very strange time in my life." Yeah no kidding!
Now here's a movie that will hold up really well throughout the years. That's because of it's social psychological themes regarding life for the modern man. Even 50 years from now when on the surface lifestyles may seem rather different, there will still exist certain emotional and psychological realities expressed in this film. Even as a period piece it can still have a timeless quality to it, given the existential subject matter. It expresses many people's failed attempts at adapting to the allure of materialistic trappings, because the attempt is often at the expense of something deeper. While the film depicts an extreme psychological break, that's merely the story's sensational example as a vehicle at making a point. Many of us feel the pressure even if most of us won't go to the extremes depicted in the story (A few people however do crack under the pressure).
I first saw this film in 1999 or 2000 and just had to watch it again in 2015. Very much worth it!
