Review of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) by Carly S — 03 Jan 2009
An epic presentation of the classic Broadway show which brings the stories of Sholom Aleichem's fictional Jewish ghetto in early 20th century Russia to life. I am very enthusiastic about this film, in that the total presentation is so true to the spirit of the concept, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
My quibbles is that the individual star performers in the film are not necessarily great singers or dancers, and the translation from stage to film loses some of the enthusiasm and musical excellence of the original.
But overall, it is still excellent. As a father and a man who feels very strongly about "tradition," I relate well to Tevye's struggles in this film.
