Review of Fatal Attraction (1987) by Carey L — 31 Aug 2010
Adrian Lyne redefined the nature of the erotic thriller with this tightly-wound potboiler (a terrifyingly appropriate description) from 1987, usually heralded for the spectacular performance by Glenn Close as the seductive, vicious Alex Forrest.
Michael Douglas and Close maintain a consistent air of sexual tension; their final confrontation before the grisly finale is executed with equally vengeful and sexual ferocity. The tape scene is also unnerving; Alex's obsession is disturbingly animalistic.
Anne Archer gives a believable and affecting performance as Douglas's jilted wife. Maurice Jarre's score, almost an unnoticeable but exceptionally effective element, adds to the wondrously ominous ambiance.
