Review of Fat Girl (2001) by Wesley R — 03 Mar 2011
Eighty-six minutes of feeling like an awkward third-wheel observing the lives of the characters. The relationship between the two sisters is an interesting one, but they mainly tend to only talk about sex most of the time; in particular the discussion of losing one's virginity for the first time.
Most of this film I just felt bored and was waiting for something bad to happen. This film just has an ever-present atmosphere of depression. Suddenly in the last 15 minutes of the film something shocking happens that literally comes right out of nowhere.
I mean there's no way you could have seen it coming since the film doesn't give you any foreshadowing on the event that ends it. It does thematically tie into the theme of innocence lost, though, but leaves you with the cinematic equivalent of having a bad taste in your mouth.
