Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Joshua C — 15 Apr 2008
I didn't know that Chinese Opera was so incredibly painful to watch (and this movie has a lot of it). Visually, this film is quite an achievement. Chen knows how to build a story. This story, however, just doesn't work for me.
The pacing felt off and the conflict for the gender bending love triangle was slightly askew. Instead of being moved, I felt like the story was predictable and slow. The best part of the movie was the detailed take on the Communist takeover.
