I saw this when it first came out in 1993, but had forgotten most of it. This movie spans the lives of two Chinese opera singers as they try to maintain their careers and friendship throughout the communist takeover of China and the Cultural Revolution, and as a woman (played by Gong Li) becomes enmeshed in their lives.
An absolute masterpiece!!!
