Having not read the book, I had the pleasure of enjoying Far From the Madding Crowd without comparison. As the tale is based on the romantic life of a female farm owner I was surprised by just how enjoyable I found it.
This was undoubtedly down to several excellent performances, particularly Matthias Schoenhaerts who steals every shot in which he is present, and fantastic direction from Thomas Vinterberg. The only thing I still didn't understand at the film's conclusion is why any of Miss.
Everdene's suitors actually liked her at all.
