Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Tina W — 26 May 2015
Far from the Madding Crowd both hit and miss in several areas. It was a visually beautiful movie and kudos to the set and costume designers. Martin Sheen, of course, doesn't know how to play a bad role and almost stole the story with his portrayal. O.
This is one of the few movies I have seen without reading the book first, so my review is strictly on the film itself -- for it's possible the book did a better job where the film missed.
One thing I did notice in the synopsis of the book was it is more about Gabriel Oak, which I think would've been better for the film.
Taking it from Bathsheba Everdene's POV lacked majorly. The antagonist (Frank Troy) had a cheesy storyline that practically killed the film entirely and completely didn't suit the MC at all. The opening of the movie with herd of sheep going off a cliff and Oak shooting and killing his dog for said herding of sheep off a cliff was so startling that I almost instantly decided I didn't like the movie. I get it, it's important and shows his drop from ranking - but still, yowsers.
If it weren't for this and Troys storyline I would've given this 4 stars instead of the 3. In the end, the chemistry for Everdene and Oak just wasn't there.
