Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Rini L — 31 Dec 2009
The imagination depicted in this movie takes me back to the sweetest and most horrifying memories of my childhood. The older I get, the harder it is for me to get the same fulfilling feeling when Christmastime rolls around each year.
But, as I watched the Ekdahl family celebrate their Christmas in Fanny and Alexander, I felt such a strong closeness to the holiday that I just hadn't felt since I was maybe 10 years old. The trauma, happiness, fear, and love present in this film left me so eager for more after each act ended.
I was so sad to see the movie end. I told my boyfriend that I wished I could watch their lives play out forever. When we began to watch the documentary included with the movie, I mentioned that it felt to me like the actors were acting in the documentary and that their characters in Fanny and Alexander were real.
It was fascinating, whimsical, and heart-wrenching. And, I haven't even mentioned the amazing cinematography, and art direction. It is a beautiful film in every aspect, and I can hardly think of anything about it that I didn't just plain love.
