Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Tom S — 01 Jan 2010
At a very intimidating 5 hours long, most would be turned off, but the film ceases to be boring, and infact, is quite the contrary. Bergman's final masterpiece is everything one could expect from a Bergman film: Deeply engaging images and almost poetic dialogue, stunningly gorgeous cinematography, the questioning of faith, and complex characters.
Persona is his prototypical masterpiece. Fanny and Alexander is his undying legacy.
