Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Stephen L — 10 Dec 2010
To be honest, I just didn't get this. I love Ingmar Bergman, and literally every movie I've seen of his up until this one has touched me on some profound, psychological or emotional level. this just went on and on and it was waayy longer than it needed to be, and I only saw the 3 hour theatrical version, I can't imagine the 5 hour version.
It started as sort of a family costume drama and I can sort of get into that, but in the last half hour they suddenly introduced magic, and I actually had to read a synopsis on the internet to find out what the hell happened.
way too long, way too incoherent, way to many characters and it doesn't have the emotional weight and devastation of the Virgin Spring or the beautiful atmosphere and style of Wild Strawberries or the Seventh Seal.
Black and white movies will always trump color movies, but I just thought Ingmar Bergman could overcome that.
