Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Miriam G — 26 May 2007
Fanny and Alexander is Bergman's best film, and that's saying something. His magnum opus is both highly personal and epic, spanning more than 5 hours (the theatrical version is shorter). Thematically, Bergman treads familiar ground in regards to religion and death, but he also succeeds in creating an engrossing portrait of childhood.
The cinematography is stunningly beautiful and rightly won an Oscar.
