Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Blackity B — 17 Jun 2009
Here comes another big disagreement between me and the critics. There is no way this film is in the same league as Bergman's previous masterpieces.
It is more than three straight hours of story comprised 95% of dialog. Dealing with subtle family relations and tons of characterizations that range from great to unnecessary. An elitist's wet dream, though not really the film's fault. It is a personal story that one can see the sincerity and devotion to, but there is nothing about it that is that brilliant or groundbreaking. The Hamlet similarities were clever, but that's about it. Must be mentioned as well that for all the character-study, the one person whom we really needed to understand - the bishop, was mostly a 2-dimensional character.
It is a well made movie, but too subjective to really work on me.
