Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by R A — 24 Jul 2012
Bergman's masterpiece. That should mean quite a lot since I had already considered Bergman to be one of the greatest directors before I had seen this (I had seen about 10 of his films prior). I had very high expectations for this film.
It exceeded them by quite a lot since I did not expect such a dark tone from the film, though Bergman is always dark. The imagery is outstanding in every tone it goes for. It can go from a brilliantly haunting scene to a scene of joy and wonder.
I don't know why, but I feel urged to compare this with "The Leopard", which is just as astounding as this. Any description of this film will not compare to the beauty and horror and detail of the real film.
All of Bergman's skills writing and directing a film come together in the single film to makes his most accomplished film yet. Well, along with "The Seventh Seal" of course. One of my top 15.
