Review of Fair Game (2010) by Tony M — 14 Jul 2011
After the risible Jumper director Doug Liman returns with this excellent political thriller which harks back to those great political thrillers of the 70s such as All The Presidents Men ,The Parllax View and Three Days of the Condor.
Liman has studied these films and it shows in the performances and tone.
Both Naomi Watts and Sean Penn are excellent as the Wilsons a family who find them selves in deep deep water after Joseph Wilson (Penn excellent) exposes the Whitehouse as liars when dealing with Weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Josephs stance on the war exposes his wife Valerie to untold danger as she is an undercover operative for the CIA.
Naomi Watts is excellent as Valerie Wilson who is hung out to dry by Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.
Liman Shows the strain the leaking of Valeries name places on the family and how through grim determination the Wilsons eventually get their side of the story out.
The film works well on every level as both a human drama and a political thriller and its to Limans great credit he manages to juggle both plots and keep them moving.
Its the best thing Liman has done since the fisrt Bourne film and it has all the lelements to amke it a great political thriller.
