Review of Fading Gigolo (2013) by Art S — 07 Nov 2014
I saw the trailer for this back in June - a film with John Turturro as a gigolo and Woody Allen as his pimp. How could you turn it down? However, it turns out that the trailer is about all you need to see to capture the essence of the film.
The rest is just padding -- and a bizarre subplot about the orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. As a director, Turturro manages to infuse a gentle humor and a real sensuality at times (often with soft Romance Language Music).
But despite the valiant efforts of a solid cast, things don't really hold together too well. Was promise wasted or was a single funny idea stretched too far?
