Review of Factotum (2005) by Adam G — 23 Jan 2009
Charles Bukowski was a jackass and an alcoholic; fortunately, he also happened to be an incredibly gifted writer, one who has capable of spinning savage, graceful poetry out of the emptiness and depravity of his own existence.
The film adaptation of Factotum captures the spirit of the novel (up until the final scene anyways, where it instead tries to lighten things instead of darken them), and Dillon does a fine job at portraying Henry Chinaski (Bukowski's stand-in literary alter-ego).
Not quite as good as Barfly (which was actually written by Bukowski, and features Mickey Rourke playing Chinaski), but still quite good.
