Along with Hitchcock's Psycho and Powell's Peeping Tom,this is the French equivalent that key marks the evolution of the horror genre. With a background in surrealism, the focus is less on shock than on the eerie effect of Christiane's waxen mask - that is except the gory surgery sequence.
