Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Charlie M — 03 Nov 2014
After his daughter is horribly disfigured in a car accident, a surgeon attempts to fix her by grafting on the faces of unwilling local girls.
Incredibly creepy & twisted, this only feels like a horror movie because of the plot. Most horror movies are stylized with a tinge of German expressionism, but this is filmed very straight-forward. There's a creepy score of organ-grinder carnival music, and you scarred girl floats moves around the house like a ghostly apparition haunting her former life. He has 15 dogs in cages which is unsettling...Oh no...he's removing a girls face....OH GOD THEY'RE REMOVING HER FACE!! WHY IS THIS TAKING SO LONG? IT'S BEEN LIKE 7 MINUTES! OH GOD THIS IS LIKE A SURGICAL SNUFF FILM!...
...Okay, I'm back. So yeah, after watching him surgically remove a girls face, this it totally a horror movie. Like a French suburban drama mixed with some human centipede. Also, possibly the stupidest detectives in movie history, and that's saying something. (Sidenote, the movie was the inspiration for the Billy Idol ballad of the same name.).
