Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Paul R — 22 Jan 2012
Stanley Kubrick. Need I say more? From one of my favourite directors I bring you: Eyes Wide Shut. Some argue this is not one of Kubrick's best films but I rate this highly. Kubrick's eye for direction was fascinating and he produced such amazing visual treats that surprise me every time I watch his films.
Eyes Wide Shut follows Tom Cruise as a doctor who becomes obsessed with having a sexual encounter after his wife (Kidman) admits having sexual fantasies about another man. He struggles with his feelings and visualises numerous sexual encounters.
As these manifest themselves in different ways we see him meet an old friend in a nightclub who mentions a secret sexual group and the also the password to get in. He decides to go but he soon realises he is completely out of his depth and danger and confusion ensue.
Cruise is great in this role and Kidman is in her prime. The film is thick with suspicion, darkness and is truly haunting. Your eyes dare not look away. Kubrick was an amazing artist and this film shines with his brilliance.
Eyes Wide Shut is a very unique film that is only really comparable to Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Both of these films are works of art and show how real filmmaking and storytelling should be done.
