Review of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) by Tim T — 10 Sep 2012
I have a new title for this film :Extremely Long and Incredibly Confusing" The plot revolves around a nine year old boy whose father died in the World Trade Center attacks. The father, played by Tom Hanks, is shown in limited flashbacks throught the film.
The boy finds a vase in his father's closet and inside a mysterious key. He sets out a sort of treausre hunt running all around New York, by himself, to try and find the lock for the key. My first question was what parent would allow their young child to run around the big city all along ringing doorbells and meeting strange people? My 2nd question was why did Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock only have one short scene together? That was a big disappoinment as was this film.
When I finally found out what the key was for, I didn't care because I was still scratching my head wondering if I missed something. I respect the subject matter but this movie was really a lousy attempt at anything.
I don't understand why the Academy chose this as one of last years best pictures. Tom Hanks was the only saving grace for me but his scenes are very limited.
