Review of Extreme Prejudice (1987) by Ola G — 16 Jul 2011
Texas Ranger Jack Benteen (Nick Nolte) upholds the law with extreme measures if he has to. He used to be friends with the local drug kingpin, Cash Bailey (Powers Booth). Jack needs to take Cash down, but his current girlfriend Sarita (Maria Conchita Alonso) has become an obstacle in between. She used to be with Cash and their relationship struggles due to this matter. At the same time a group of presumably dead soldiers appears in the same town. Sgt. Larry McRose (Clancy Brown), Sgt. Buck Atwater (William Forsythe), Sgt. Declan Patrick Coker (Matt Mulhern), Sgt. Charles Biddle (Larry B. Scott) and Sgt. Luther Fry (Dan Tullis Jr) are lead by Major Paul Hackett (Michael Ironside) in an operation towards Cash Bailey to bring him down. Suddenly Jack has both Cash and as well Major Hackett and his soldiers to handle...
Ahh.. a proper Sam Peckinpah homage from Walter Hill that used to work with Peckinpah. When I saw "Extreme Prejudice" at the movies in 1987 the Swedish Board of Censorship had literally massacred this movie. There was no action left. The end battle started and then suddenly everyone was dead. What a bloody rip off that was! So it was good to resee this one without those brutal cuts. This is a quite good 80´s action movie. Solid script with as said several nods to Peckinpah and his "The Wild Bunch", great cast and rough action. Love the opening title sequence and even the music in it is pretty cool. Nick Nolte is hard as nails and he delivers his punchlines with passion. Maria Conchita Alonso is beautiful, and what an ensemble cast with Ironside, Brown and Forsythe. "Extreme Prejudice" seems to be hard to find on dvd which is a shame. I reckon the movie company should release it yet again in a proper way and make it less hard to get hold of.
