This film is absolutely not for all tastes, but if you're a fan of horror films, this one is an absolute must see! Remaking a cult classic is rarely a good idea and rarely successful, especially when it's a big budget remake of a scrappy, independent low budget film.
However, this "Evil Dead" remake is about as good a remake as you could want. The original films are still better, but this film manages to ride a careful balance of begin scary and grotesque, while at the same time not taking itself too seriously and taking the audience on a fast paced roller coaster ride of a horror flick.
It also manages to reference many of the touchstones of the original films, including the demon in the basement, the hand with a mind of it's own, the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta and even the vine scene, along quite a few others.
Similar to the original, this film is wildly over the top in terms of gore, black humor and really just sheer audacity, but like the original, it manages to somehow pull it off. Generally speaking, "Evil Dead" is a horror movie for horror fans.
It delivers a fun scary movie, with loads of gory practical effects and does it in an unpretentious and thoroughly enjoyable manner. And fans of the old films should be sure to sit through or fast forward to the end of the final film credits!
