Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Tal G — 08 Apr 2018
It's a slightly worse than ok sci-fi horror, but my expectations of it were pretty damn low before I began watching it.
First off, I LOVED the set design and the overall production. Even some of the CGI was still fine considering the movie's age. The practical set, the design of the space ships, the tools the crew used. They were all very imaginative, creative, and were all consistently in tune with the style of the movie. I miss this sort of design in newer sci-fi movies.
The concepts the movie plays with are really cool, but it felt like the movie was a bit skimp on showing us what was talked about. All we basically got are a few flashes. I had an issue with that. The mild scariness this movie manages to conjure up could've been fueled by the main idea of the movie, but for some reason it barely did that.
The acting was all stiff at best, and trashy at worst. But oh well.
The scares were mostly very underwhelming and basic. I was expecting something much more intense.
I feel like the worst thing about this movie is the Cooper character. He was the comic relief character, and it just felt dumb. I felt dumb when he said anything or appeared on screen.
And of course the flat, weak ending.
So... Yeah, it had some things going for it, but a whole bunch of other negative things that bring the overall experience down. Those few good things still make the movie worth it if you're into horror and sci-fi, and I suppose the Warhammer 40K universe.
