Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Dan C — 20 Apr 2013

I'd been dying to see this for years just because of a summary I heard once: "It's about a ship that passes through Hell..." There's a lot of potential in that premise, but unfortunately this movie is a mess.

Despite a few brief flashes of grotesque violence and gore, most of the movie grasps after the Shining, focusing its energy on creeping dread and torturing its characters with hallucinations. It really does feel like "the Shining in space", and despite its very promising concept, Event Horizon is a weak amalgam of that classic, Alien, and Hellraiser.
