Review of Event Horizon (1997) by James J — 27 Jul 2010
The events of 'Event Horizon' are cliched, but its premise is a fascinating one: deep-space horror thriller (although, in this case, the vision doesn't extend past our solar system). The writing is pretty weak (especially the attempts at "humor"), as is most of the acting. Lawrence Fishburne (and Sam Neill, to a lesser extent) ensures that the entire cast isn't terrible, but this is definitely probably one of his career lows. But for some reason, this is entertaining for the first half. After that, it steadily goes downhill.
This is not a very good movie. If you're looking for something like this, I'd recommend 'Sunshine' (2007), directed by Danny Boyle. Conceptually, they are fairly similar, except one is markedly better. I'll leave that to you to figure out which one I'm talking about.
