Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Aj G — 05 Oct 2010
Director Paul W.S. Anderson's genre bending effort Event Horizon was a film that suffered greatly from incompetent marketing prior to it's initial theatrical release. In short, it was presented to cinema-going audiences as pure sci-fi spectacle (ala Lucas' Star Wars) without even once letting on that it was actually a horror film.
As a result, the vast majority of people who saw it were not only repulsed by it's graphic content and disturbed by Anderson's dread-filled script, they also felt "cheated" by it's heavily disguised premise.
Subsequently, poor box-office reciepts sent the film tailspinning into DVD bargain bins worldwide. A shame, really. It's not that it's a BAD film (the production values speak to the contrary) it's just a severely misunderstood one IMO.
If you're an unwavering fan of both sci-fi and horror then give this one a go and see what you think. I liked it, but hey...that's just me.
