Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Noman S — 31 May 2011
Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.
In 2047 a missing mining vessel named Event Horizon is discovered just beyond Neptune's orbit. A rescue ship, that includes rescue personnel and the engineer that created the Event Horizon, is sent to retrieve the vessel. Once onboard the Event Horizon, the rescue crew finds everyone dead and a strange presence that the vessel may have picked up during its voyage.
"You can't leave. She won't let you.".
Paul W.S. Anderson, director of Mortal Kombat, Soldier, Resident Evil, Aliens vs. Predator, Death Race, Resident Evil: Afterlife, and the upcoming The Three Musketeers, delivers Event Horizon. The storyline for this picture is very good for the science fiction genre. The premise is fascinating and on par with the Sphere novel by Michael Crichton. The acting is first rate for the genre and includes Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, and Sean Pertwee.
"It's in your head. It's just in your head.".
We came across Event Horizon while sitting in a hotel room over Memorial Day weekend and decided to watch this for the first time in a long time. This was better than I remembered. I have read the Sphere by Michael Crichton and always felt this was an obvious knock-off; however, this was better than I gave it credit for upon its release. It does have a Shinning element due to the space isolation concept (Sphere did the same thing, but instead, underwater). This is definitely a rare gem within the science fiction genre.
"Looks like a meat grinder to me.".
Grade: B+/A-.
